Going for a visa interview can be nerve-wracking, especially if it's your first time. But don't worry too much, most Tier 4 UK student visas are granted provided you have all the right documents and can give reasons why you wish to study in the UK.
5 things to do on your first day at Uni
If you are an international student coming to study in the UK, your first day at university can be a little overwhelming so here are some tips to get yours through your first day.
1. Enroll, get a student card and register your interest in a student society club.
Generally, you can upload your picture for your student card online before you arrive. There are rules to follow, for example, a plain background and a clear view of your face, but you can upload your favorite picture of yourself. This picture will also be put on your online account and university email, so it's important you like it. If you didn't get a chance to upload a photo during pre-registration you get another chance on your enrolment day, so wear your favorite shirt. You will receive your student card during your enrolment. It's important to keep it on you as some universities ask for students to swipe their card to enter buildings or at the start of class to mark attendance. It is also important to register your interest in a university society or club.

2. Register at the GB
You should register with a local doctor/GP as soon as possible when you arrive in the UK in case you need medical assistance whilst you are studying. Registering with a local GP (General Practitioner - doctor) practice will make sure you are able to access healthcare when you need to. A GP can provide support for your mental and physical health, and they are usually the first health service you should contact when you are experiencing a problem.

To open a bank account, here are the documents you will need to bring to the bank

4. Register for your national insurance number
You would need a National Insurance number to be able to get a job and the application process between 1 to 2 weeks. The National Insurance (NI) number is unique for every person and you'll keep your NI number for life. It consists of a unique set of numbers and letters allocated by the Department of Works and Pensions (DWP).Your NI number is used by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) and the DWP to identify who you are and to ensure the correct amount of tax and National Insurance are paid by every person.
What are National Insurance contributions?
National Insurance contributions are different from your regular income tax. Taken by your employer, they are compulsory deductions from your earnings that are given to the UK pension scheme. The UK pension scheme will pay out retired UK citizens eligible to draw a pension with these funds.
Who needs a NI number?
Anyone planning to work in the UK needs to get their NI number organized. Many employers won't hire you if you don't have one, and you'll also have to pay emergency tax rates, which are much higher than regular tax rates. Applying for your NI number can be a very time-consuming process and it is a requirement by law that you must be physically present in the UK to start the process. Complete our easy online application form and we'll assist by ensuring your details are registered with the DWP and emailing you the date of your Evidence of Identity (EOI) interview.
